THE ADVANTAGE OF EXPERIENCE

Environment

Lets work together to create sustainable houses for a better future.

What is Sustainable Design?

Since the beginning of her career, Stephanie Skyring has been passionate about designing beautiful, comfortable buildings that balance the social, economic and environmental needs unique to each project.

Social Sustainability:   Good design is about creating spaces that bring joy to everyday life.  We work collaboratively with our clients to achieve outcomes that inspire and make life easier. We choose Australian Made products to support the local community.

Economic Sustainability:   Your project budget and return on investment are a key part of our design brief. We investigate your project feasibility in our Design Ideas Workshop service to make certain that we can achieve both.  Not all houses are worth renovating and we will advise you when its better to sell.

Environmental Sustainability:   Balancing the needs of our environment has never been more important. Globally, buildings and construction account for nearly 40% of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions whilst also having a significant impact on our natural habitats.  We design carefully and creatively, selecting materials and products that address environmental criteria to reduce our impact.

We design to meet these environmental criteria:

LESS IS MORE

  • Efficient floor plan: 60m2 per person.
  • Smart minimal details.

WOOD IS GOOD

  • Timber products are our first preference.
  • Recycled timber & locally grown plantation timber.

ENERGY

  • Climate Responsive & Passive House
  • All electric.
  • Solar Power.

LOCALLY MADE

  • Australian, New Zealand grown & manufactured.
  • Low embodied energy.

PREFABRICATION

  • Internal fitout or whole building.
  • Factory waste is readily reused & recycled

REUSE & RECYCLE

  • Reuse & refurbish existing buildings
  • Less manufacturing = Less waste to landfill.

WATER

  • Rainwater collection.
  • Greywater & Blackwater reuse.

NATURE

  • Green walls & roof
  • Smaller building footprint = more space for nature.

NON-TOXIC

  • Fresh air & healthy interiors.
  • No  toxic emissions in manufacture & use.

LONG LIFESPAN

  • Durable materials suited to our Subtropical climate.
  • Less waste to landfill.

Certified Passive House Designer

Certified Passive House & Climate Responsive Design

Stephanie Skyring is a Certified Passive House Designer

Certified Passive House is a voluntary international standard for constructing buildings that deliver a healthy indoor environment that is comfortable in temperature and humidity, while using very little energy. Thermal Insulation. Windows: solar access & shading. Airtightness. Heat recovery ventilation. Renewable based energy system.  We use Passive House modelling to calculate energy use and internal temperatures in design stages to optimise Climate Responsive Design.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is scientific analysis of the environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product’s life, from raw material extraction through materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use and demolition.

Life Cycle Assessment is a critical part of Skyring Architects design & materials selection process.

Australian Architects Declare

‘For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour.  The research and technology exist for us to begin that transformation now, but what has been lacking is collective will.’
